1. John C. Moore 1 was born on Mar 27, 1820 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, died on Dec 14, 1901 at age 81, and was buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, Tishomingo Co., Mississippi.

General Notes: John C. Moore came to Alabama in the early 1840's. The family is listed on the 1850 census of Franklin County (now Colbert County).

The 1850 census of Franklin County, Alabama shows that John Moore's father and mother were born in North Carolina. He never mentioned their names, so the family thinks they were dead when he came to Franklin County.

The "C" in his name may stand for Calvin since that is part of his youngest son's name.

John had 4 children by E.C.R. Bowling. Three were born in Alabama and one in Mississippi.

John next married Nancy Higdon Hudson in Alabama. There is no record of their marriage because the court house in Tuscumbia burned and destroyed all records before 1870. The 1860 Tishomingo County census shows the 4 children of John Moore by his first wife, 3 children of Nancy by her first husband (Allen Hudson) and 1 child of theirs. John and Nancy appear to have moved to Mississippi about 1858.

It has always been said in the Moore family that Robert D. Higdon who lived in Eastport, and owned a fishtrap there, was a brother of Nancy Higdon. Very little information on this Robert Higdon has been found.

In 1900 John deeded his land to his 2 sons who lived on the property. Robert and George Moore. He bought land first in 1867 and again in 1889 from Al Robinson. This is the land where he lived and raised his family by Nancy Higdon.

John entered service during the Civil War in August 1862. He was wounded in the hand and taken captive to Fort Chase, Ohio. After the war ended, he was paroled from there, and walked home. Nancy thought he was dead since she had not heard from him. She did not know him at first upon his return. He was in service about 3 years.

John farmed, had a grist mill on a creek that bordered his land. He also had a blacksmith shop where he made and sharpened tools.

General Notes: John Alexander "Alec" was only 2 or 3 months old when his mother, Louvina Bonds Bishop died and he lived with his grandparents, Greenberry and Mary Bonds.

America and Alec went to Texas and was living there when she died about 1895. The 1880 census of Texas does not show them in that state. But the 1900 Sounddex of Oklahoma shows Alex Bishop family living in Greer County, Oklahoma in the township of Mangum. He was engaged in the livery and feed business. I could not find the date of his death. America and Alex had 2 sons: Noah and John Lester.

After America died, Alec brought the 2 boys back to Miss. for their grandparents (John and Nancy Moore) to care for so he could work. He later married again to Lilie F. _____ and came for his boys. They were never in Mississippi again.
