Research Notes: The tracking of Joseph F. Wilson through census records has proven to be an interesting challange. The 1850 Census list Joseph as still living with his parents in Monroe Co., Tennessee. The McMinn Co. records indicate that Joseph and Frances married in 1856. The 1860 Census shows them still living in McMinn Co. with a 1 year old daughter, Mary.
This is where it gets interesting. No record on the 1870 Census can be found. The 1880 Census record shows the family living in Lewis Co., Missouri. On this census there are a total of six children. The oldest five are listed as being born in Tennessee with the youngest born in Missouri about 1871. It could be that they were moving in 1870 and thus did not appear on the census from either Missouri or Tennessee.
The problem is that the mother on the 1880 Census is listed as Amanda and her birth place is Missouri. Additionally, Amanda is about six years younger than Frances. To further confuse the issue, the death certificates for both Angelo and James lists the mothers name as Jane Barnett born in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Both the 1900 and 1910 census lists Joseph and Amanda with no children in the house. The number of years married places the date in 1874, after the birth of all of the children.
One possible solution to the puzzle is that Frances died sometime in the 1860's and Joseph married Amanda.
No records of the marriage, death, or burial of either Joseph or Amanda has been found.
